Avalon Week 19

I had a fantastic week!!! This Easter Weekend was a fantastic one too! Especially Sunday. We had the whole C...... family come again, they're coming quite consistently but will walk in late and sit in the back (intentionally because Jeremy is VERY shy at first. An "introvert" he called himself.) They are doing amazing! Jeremy is doing amazing! He's going to be baptized this weekend!!!! And another cool thing that happened, he asked me to baptize him! How cool is that? I'm so excited! It feels so good. So  the plan is for Jeremy to get Baptized then in 3 weeks he will have received the priesthood and then he'll be able to baptize his children on May 21st. It's  going to be such an amazing experience. I am so excited for it!

Our other investigator David K.... is doing great as well! We were able to meet with him this week and set him with a baptismal date for May 14th! He's way excited for it too, he's such a cool guy. It was funny, when we were talking to him about baptism he had a few questions for us and one of them was, "Am I going to have to be naked for this?" HAHAHA! Of course not! That was a first one for me and Elder Taylor! He was serious too, but we assured him that he would be wearing white clothing. That was funny. I was pretty happy and surprised that I didn't get transferred as well but it's all super awesome!

I sure hope that you start to get to feeling better mom! Being sick is not fun especially since you have to go to work and what not. No fun at all! But like you said, sickness brings an appreciation for good health. It's all part of the plan right? Thank goodness for Adam's fall! It's so cool to have the understanding of the gospel that we do, because most of the christian world condemns Adam and Eve for their transgression, but it was necessary, and a way was set up so that we can overcome the fall and that was the atonement of Jesus Christ. What a wonderful blessing it is. :) Alma 7:11,12 is a good scripture to look up for that.

Thanks for the update on the family and on Missy(our dog-ss), it's good to know about her health. I don't know if she'll make it through the rest of my mission but who knows. I am doing so great this is by far one of the highlights of my mission, serving here in the Avalon area. Definitely one of my highest moments because I've grown to love these people so much here. It's awesome!

Avalon Week 18

I'm glad that the weather was good for you in Quail creek, I loved camping there! It's a really pretty place and enjoyable when it's not so windy. Seriously that's all I could remember of that place was all the wind there.

Well I'm doing awesome, especially since I'M NOT GETTING TRANSFERRED!!!!! Hooray! My prayers have been answered! I'll be staying another transfer and probably get to see my awesome friends over here baptized. Jeremy C....., his son and daughter, Melissa L... David K....., and who knows who else! There are some awesome things going on! Jeremy actually asked to have his baptismal date pushed back a week so that he can get off coffee to enable him to be baptized. So his date is April 30th! Exciting! Melissa was taught in the home of Chris Hoke since she kinda knows their family already, and there she accepted the challenge to be baptized on May 14th! David K..... has been to church 2 weeks in a row and came to a fireside that Bro. Hoke put on last night so he's totally doing awesome! He's thinking about baptism right now and we'll be inviting him to a date next time we see him on Thursday. I am so happy right now! I love it here! I think it's funny that in the course of my mission I've been in only 3 areas. Johnstown for 6 months, South Side for 4.5, and now Avalon for (soon to be) 6 months. I know some missionaries that have been out for shorter periods of time and have been to many more areas than myself. But I really like having long periods of time in areas because you really get to know the ward, the people, and the area so much better, and you have more time to work and see great things. I really feel bad for some missionaries that stay in an area for only 6 weeks then go to a different one. I feel I've been very blessed to have the areas I have at this time.

This coming week is Easter and I'm really excited about it. It's a time for a more emphasized remembrance of Jesus' life and atonement for us so that we can be cleansed from sin and return to live with Heavenly Father again. He lives! And I love having the calling of being His representative and teaching and testifying in His behalf. I think about that often so I can remember who I represent while I'm out here.

Avalon Week 17

The weather in Utah sounds absolutely horrendous right now! Yesterday for us over here it was nearly 80 degrees! It was a wonderful day and the first time this year that I actually got to wear my short sleeve shirt out and about! It was great! Today is equally awesome in temperature wise, it cooled a little bit but I think it'll still be in the 70's finally! The weather here is almost as bad as it is in Utah in that it doesn't want to make up it's mind if it wants to have spring or go straight to summer. I think it went straight to summer this year. Phil (Punxsutawney Phil-ss) was dead wrong. I'm glad that you got that letter that Kimball (Hill now serving in the Philippines-ss) wrote. I thought it was addressed to me at first too until I got another one in english! Oh well, I was carrying it around with me all day just in case I found someone that was Filipino and could translate the letter for me. I didn't this week... I have in times past found a few Filipino ladies. Strange, their always women. I don't think I've met a Filipino man out here yet... Oh well!

Yeah this transfer has gone by so fast! I really want to stay another transfer so that I can see the C....... family get baptized and then a couple other people as well! The C......s came out to church again and stayed this time for 2 out of the 3 meeting which is really good! The kids seemed like they had a really good time going. We had an opportunity in the week to have the Bishop come out with us to teach them. It was really a fun experience and the ward is really excited about Jeremy's baptism. So when we went over to the C......'s with Bishop, I noticed something different about Jeremy. Well for one, he shaved off his mo-hawk so now he has a buzzed haircut, and he's much more involved in the lessons and participates more in the lessons. He's doing awesome and is still ready to go for April 23rd!!

We have another investigator by the name of David K...... He's a 24 y.o. guy that we met on the street one day, and we were able to set up a return appointment and teach him in a coffee shop. He seemed really receptive about the message of the Restoration. Well he sent us a text message (yes, we as zone leaders have texting) and told us he would be coming out to church and sure enough he did! He came out to church and came to a Sunday school class after sacrament. He said that the sacrament meeting was a little noisy because of the kids (and some parents too, >:( [angry face]) but he said that it was something he would get used to and committed to come back next Sunday and was telling some members of the ward he would do so too! Awesome!

Another totally cool investigator that we have is Melissa L.... We talked to her while she was doing some gardening and she was really interested. It turns out that she has had a lot of interaction with the church, or rather, church members. Her mom's best friend back in HS was a member, she used to nanny for some Members somewhere, and her son goes to the same elementary school and is in the same grade as Chris Hoke's daughter. So that is was cool! She's very interested too and was telling us last night that she was wondering the best way to talk to her not-very-religious husband about going to church and participating in lessons, and we've only been meeting with her for 2 weeks! She's totally going to get baptized one of these days in the near future!

The Lord is really blessing us here and it is really a privilege to be a part of it. I am having the best time of my life out here and I have never been happier! It feels good. Thanks again for everything! I love you and miss you so much!

Avalon Week 16

What a wonderful conference indeed! I learned so much from all of the speakers! My favorites were the ones that President Eyring gave! I'm beginning to really love him as a speaker. It was so much fun to go over my notes in studies this morning and to recount the feelings I got from listening to conference. I was able to take 15 pages of notes (they were on smaller pieces of paper, probably about 6.5"x8", but still!) I especially love the part where Elder Uchtdorf quoted St Francis Assissi in saying "Preach the gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words." That was my favorite quote by far this conference because it is so true! Our examples are one of the most influential things we can do to help people know who we are and what we believe.

We didn't have anyone come out to watch the conference but they did watch it at home, the C......'s did that we know of, other than that we don't know. Oh speaking of the C........'s... Jeremy C....... is going to get baptized!!! He's set with a date, which is April the 23rd. He's such a humble guy and was thinking about getting baptized, and now wants to. Elder Taylor had prepared a lesson about eternal families a few weeks back and we didn't get to teach it to them due to scheduling conflicts. But when we met with them on Friday we had a very very spiritual lesson in which we taught and bore testimony about the importance of families and their eternal nature. The Spirit was so strong, and filled the room as we invited Jeremy to get baptized. Sis. C........, was in tears and so was Jeremy, I was about to cry but some how held my composure as we promised that the atonement would cleanse him, and make him worthy that one day he might baptize his own children! (He had expressed concern that he wasn't "fit" to baptize his children after he was baptized.) It was one of the most spiritual lessons I've had on my mission and I know that he'll make it. We made sure to say a
prayer of thanks in the car after the lesson to our Heavenly Father for blessing us and sanctifying us so we could be a segway for the Spirit to be there, and for his softening of Jeremy's heart. It was an Incredible
experience!!! You could just see the hope and happiness that came into his countenance by the end of the lessons. And I might add that Sis. C...... is doing a fantastic job at keeping the family on track and doing what they are supposed to do. I can see the Spirit of the Lord working on them little by little, and soon they will all be active in the church!

So next Sunday I'll be at 299 eh? Wow that has gone by really fast! I can't believe that it's already been that long. Yes, it is true it is going by really fast for me, but I am loving nearly every minute of it. I love having the opportunities of sharing and teaching the gospel. If I weren't out here I wouldn't have had the opportunity of meeting the C........ Family and helping them become united in the church. This is so rewarding, both in the seen and unseen. At times I wish it wouldn't have to end. But it must. I love you and miss you mom! Have a great week and be safe!

Avalon Week 15

Things are going wonderful and this week has been a pretty good week! I'm doing great! I'm feeling great! It's cold over here, but it is starting to warm up. Slowly but surely. When it does get warmer Elder Taylor and I will be playing some golf on p-days! There is a member in the neighboring ward that works in a high up position at a golf course near the church in my area and we get to play there for free! So that'll be fun when the time comes! :)
  
I am so excited for general conference!! It is my favorite time of year, where the prophets and apostles get up and speak to us! I never really appreciated General Conference until I came out on my mission, I probably said that the past 2 sessions I've been out but it's true! I get so much more out of it now that I've realized the importance of prophets. We are so lucky to be able to be led by inspired men of God. I sure hope that I can get all of our investigators to come out to see it!

And how about Garrett getting called to the same mission as Kimball!! That's way cool!

So the happenings for this week:
Yesterday, we had a really cool activity at the church! The ward hosted the annual Inter-faith Gathering. The Inter-faith Gathering as an activity that many many different people of different religions come and give a presentation on what the people of their religion do to strengthen family, or family traditions. The theme for the event was "Faith, Family, Future." So naturally our church did a presentation on Family history, family night, temple work, etc. It was really cool there were different religions like Baha'i, Muslim, Islam, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Universal Unitarianism, Quakers, Mormon, and one more that I don't remember. Any way there were three, 20 minute blocks in which we could choose to go to any one of the presentations that were
held in any one of the rooms throughout the room. I went to Judaism, and Universal Unitarianism, and ours. Judaism was great, they talked about the Passover Meal and the Seder Meal. And Universal Unitarianism was….. very interesting. It's kind of a open to all and every religion, study whatever you want, and whatever you feel is what you like, kind of thing. It was really odd and didn't make sense to me even after they explained it to me. That was fun because we got to talk to a lot of people about the church afterward because there was a mix and mingle type thing with a bunch of different finger foods. We were able to teach a few people and hand out 2 copies of the Book of Mormon. It was a wonderful opportunity to interact with people of the different faiths, and teach them.

So about our investigators. Danielle ended up moving out of our area. She said she would come yesterday to church but ended up not coming. We don't have her address or phone number because they were both getting
changed, so we have no way to get back into touch with her, so we don't know what's going on. Our only hope is that she will come back to church next week, call us, or go to church out in her new area. We really don't have anyone really too solid that we're working with, outside of the part member families. Which brings me to the C........!!! The whole family came out to church yesterday! And it turns out that Jeremy told sister C....... that he is thinking about getting baptized! Which apparently has NEVER happened before! He told us yesterday at church that he was doing such. OH YEAH! We're seeing some great success with them lately and I know it's because of prayer! How wonderful that Jeremy's heart is being softened.

So this past week I was able to go on exchange with my buddy Elder Keeton Stewart and serve with him for a day in his area! It was such a blast serving with someone I knew from back home, when to Jr. High as well as High School with. He's such a great missionary and will do great out here! It was said a few times on the exchange, "Who'da thought that I would be sitting in a car, in Pennsylvania, on my mission with [Ben Serrano/Keeton Stewart]." Kinda fun!

Oh yeah this is the most important one! I don't know if you got an e-mail or anything, but the mission office address is changing!! You know, the one that you would send letters/boxes to me and they would then forward them to me? Yeah, the office is moving to a different location. The Address is:

So that's what's going on here for this week! I love being out here on the mission there are so many great experience that I get to take part in! The scriptures are true, which testify of Christ who lives. And we get to listen to the words of his holy prophets this weekend! :)

Avalon Week 14

I am glad that you had a great time on your birding trip, it sounds like it was pretty productive too! All the birds are coming back now and when I wake up a I can hear all the birds chirping and what not. It's pretty cool because our apartment complex is surrounded by trees (well all of Pennsylvania is filled with trees, but this complex more than my past apartments)! I see blue birds, cardinals, and the common ones like robins, sparrows, and chickadees. I saw a few seagulls the other day and was really confused because there really isn't any place for seagulls up here, and I didn't think that they were common. I guess that they were passing through. Who knows. 

I am doing well, and am staying healthy.

So there are some exciting happenings that are going on here!

-Do you remember Bailey L.....? The young lady I was teaching in South Side? Well I saw the missionaries that are there at a meeting last Tuesday and they gave me a wonderful update!! All of the things that were hindering her from being baptized had passed and she’s ready to go! Her boyfriend found a job and moved out, her friend that was dying of Leukemia passed away, and she’s out of mourning. So she’ll be baptized within the next couple of weeks! A guy I tracted into in SS, and taught a couple of times, is getting baptized this weekend, and Courtland H...... is going through the proper repentance process and is humble and working to get his priesthood restored!! When I found out all of this my heart was filled with joy and I felt like I could run for miles, I was so happy! Even though I’m not personally seeing the fruits of my labors, I am happy to know that they are there and being harvested. You know that that was a hard area for me, with being doubled in and working an area that wasn’t worked in for 4.5 months. Knowing all of this makes my mission. I am so happy I can’t even describe with words, and if I tried it wouldn’t do justice. I know that this kind of happiness only comes from doing the Lords work and I love it!

-Danielle (turns out she’s read the Book of Mormon 3 times!) is thinking and praying on baptism right now and will let us know tomorrow on what she says. She has an intellectual testimony of the Book of Mormon and somewhatofa spiritual one, but there is some bad news that goes along with this story though. She might be moving. Just outside of our area too! She’ll be moving due to work commute, just so she could be closer. We strongly encouraged her to move to one cities in the outer boundaries of our area so she could be at a half way mark. Not because we’re selfish and want to baptize her but because she really loves the ward and wants to stay in it. So we’ll see what she decides tomorrow, pray hard.

-The C........s are still thinking on where it should be. There really is no rule and keeping them in the area and having them baptized there, but it will still be counted for our area/ward. We’re going to talk to them more and hopefully get Bro. C...... interested in getting baptized as well. -We were able to obtain 2 new investigators, and we are excited to be able to teach them. One of our new investigators is named Will, he so cool. We had tracted into him before and stopped by to talk to him and he was out on his porch enjoying the nice weather. We got into a conversation with him and he brought up how he was watching a televangelist and said that the proper way of doing baptism is by immersion, and he hadn't had that done before, so we told him that we could do that for him! He seemed very interested, and asked if we had power to be able to do that, and we of course said that we did, and it was the proper authority too. We were able to set up a return appointment with him to teach him more. It was just a testimony strengthener for me that it's not that scary or awkward to talk to people about baptism just in regular conversation, and now he knows that that's what we want him to eventually do, and be a part of.

And that's about it for this week, I'm having a great time serving here and are finding a lot of cool people to be able to teach! This area is great and the ward is great here too! I am currently reading through the Doctrine and Covenants and I am loving every page! It's really cool because a lot of it in there is the Lord speaking towards missionary work, which was and is the main focus of the Church. It's really motivational!

Avalon Week 13

I am doing well thank you! I'm a little tired because of the time change, but other than that I'm doing well. Elder Taylor and I are getting along well and striving to work hard here while the day lasts! The weather was starting to look good then it started to snow, then it melted, then it got really cold yesterday, now the sun is somewhat shining, so we're having somewhatofa roller coaster when it comes to the weather.  As to what we've been up to, just the same great thing we get to do everyday! Share the gospel! Here's what happened this week:

This week we had a successful week in helping people come out to church, as well as picking up new investigators. The investigators (3) that were able to come out to church said that they had a great time. One, Danielle S..., just randomly came to church last week and came again this week. She moved here from Altoona and has done A LOT of studying about the church and even the standard works. Apparently she had been taught a couple of times by missionaries in Altoona and since then she has read the whole Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, and she’s almost done with the Doctrine and Covenants!!!! Not to mention she told us that she’s read Preach My Gospel as well!! I’ve never met a Non-Member who has done that much reading and studying!! So we set an appointment with her this Thursday and plan on setting her with a baptismal date for within the next 2 weeks because she's come out to church for 2 weeks now. So that is really exciting!

With the other 3 new investigators, one is an 11 year old girl, Abby R..., of an active couple that we started teaching (she had been taught in the past but hasn't been taught for some months) she’s really cool, she would have been baptized a while ago but her biological mother won’t allow it for now. The other 2 are a sister and friend of a former investigator, Kat F... (catfisher, get it? Like dad! J ) and her friend Jess. They are really cool, when we were teaching Julie F..., Kat’s sister, she said that Kat was an atheist and a lost cause, so when we met her and found that she is heavily involved with a church youth group we were a bit surprised. Plus, after talking with her she was interested in hearing about the Book of Mormon, so last Tuesday we were able to teach her about that. We dropped Jeff and Brian as investigators because they’re really not that reliable and didn’t seem like they wanted to change, so that was a bummer.

The C......s are doing well. Sis C..... talked to us about getting her children baptized!! Apparently her brother was re-activated and got the priesthood restored to him, so he’s able to baptize. So she wants them baptized by him out in Ohio, which is a little odd and we’re not sure if that’s allowed or not having them baptized not in the ward that they reside. It’s exciting that they want to get baptized but we need to figure out what’s going to happen where it takes place.

Our week was pretty great I would say. It was an absolute tender mercy and blessing that Danielle came to church and is so prepared! I was getting kind of down on myself and discouraged because I hadn't seen a baptism in a little over 10 months. I know baptisms aren't a measure of success but it's kind of hard when it's been that long. But I know that the Lord is aware of my situation and the desires of my heart, and I feel that this is a great blessing that was received from Him. Now I just need to do my part to make sure everything goes well. :) Please continue to pray for me, it is much appreciated!
